Another one for Texas

It seems like everyday I turn on the news, another shooting has occurred leaving a handful of innocent lives dead. It leads me to ask myself if there will ever be a time where newspapers have no content to write about for the day, no shootings to take their front cover. Texas has sure seen their fair share of violence within these last couple weeks and today was just another horrific event to add to the list.

In Austin, Texas this morning, a gunman opened fire at an entertainment event killing one innocent bystander and wounding others. Police at the scene claim it w_BB_5182as a very chaotic scene with so many individuals there for the event. That being said, I am sure the open fire did not help the chaos.

It is scary to think that you can be anywhere at anytime minding your own business and enjoying life, and get fatally shot for no reason. It leads me to wonder about gun laws and their effectiveness with so many issues revolving around whether we should tighten the strictness on them or not. People should not be scared to go outside and have that fear of falling victim to another person’s own issues. But when all we see on the news lately are innocent lives being taken, how could someone not admit that it crosses their mind once in a while when they are in a public place? Should the government tighten laws on gun control and who should be allowed to carry them? This is such a controversial topic nowadays with all of the violence going on. I think that there should be stricter rules on gun laws, but it is our given right to own guns. Maybe the government should control what types of guns individuals can purchase, for example assault rifles, but they should not take away our Constitutional right. What do you think about gun laws when all of these shootings have been happening on what feels like a daily basis? Please comment with your thoughts and opinions on this matter!

No justice for Chandra

15 years. That is the amount of time that has passed since the breaking news of a girl’s death from Washington, Chandra Levy. While this seems like a long time, for many who remember these headlines, it feels like just yesterday.  And the recent announcement that her accused killer will be set free will force many to live through the nightmare all over again.

635679162436412843-AFP-FILES-US-CRIME-MURDER-LEVYChandra was an intern in Washington DC and disappeared in 2001 without a trace and later found dead. Her disappearance and death brought to light a scandalous affair. She was said to have been having an affair with a well known U.S. Representative Gary Condit. Condit was originally a suspect in her disappearance and was questioned intensively about their relationship and later cleared. Even though his name was cleared the events ruined his career.

It was later deteremined that another individual was found to be responsible for her murder. A fellow cellmate claimed that he learned Levy’s killer was a man  by the name of Ingmar Guandique. Ingmar ultimately was charged on six counts and found guilty of Levy’s murder.

But fast forward to today, Ingmar is now being released due to the lack of evidence against him. I think we get so caught up in the details of the murder that we seem to forget about the family of the victim. It is hard to imagine how Chandra’s family must feel to live through the events all over again, knowing that her killer is still out there and there is no justice for her. We are so quick to want to capture somebody and to put them in jail, that sometimes there are steps in the process that get missed. I think the investigators and attorneys should have been a little more hesitant in believing a cellmate who was also a criminal just to get a suspect. Do you think they should have conducted more research or is taking the word on an inmate a valid process? Please comment your thoughts and opinions!

Breakthrough in equality

Women have been fighting for equal rights ever since I can remember (only 21 years) and more. Laws have been passed, people and businesses have gotten in trouble for sexism, and women still are not seen equally to men. Women have fought relentlessly for simple things, such as equal pay. When will women have a fair chance? When will the glass ceiling set in place for many years now finally shatter? Men are always seen as the CEO, the breadwinner, the president of the United States…except for now.

As the world knows, Hillary Cl160607070235-hillary-clinton-june-6-exlarge-169-2inton has been nominated as the Democratic Nominee as of Tuesday this week, beating out Bernie Sanders. After such a huge and long fight, she won the race for her party. This is huge
for women everywhere and is the ultimate glass ceiling breaker. It is truly amazing how far women have come from the days where we weren’t even allowed to vote. While I’m not saying I am for or against Hillary Clinton, I am saying that it is a huge deal. This breakthrough will give women everywhere the inspiration to compete with their male counterparts. That is correct, 44 presidents later we have a woman on a major political party ticket. But will history repeat itself and have another male president in office?

I am hoping that this epic breakthrough gives women the power to believe in themselves and use Hillary as an example of how women can do anything. It will be surprising to see if she will make it to the oval office or if she will be beat by another man. What are your thoughts on a woman holding such a high and powerful position? Do you think this will empower women around the world to fight for an equal chance? Please comment your opinions!

An end to success

Who doesn’t have an iPhone these days? Everywhere you look, the chances are that they are staring down at one of Apple’s various phones. Apple seems to have released every product and multiple variations of their devices such as: the Apple Watch, the iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6, 6s, iPads and more. But how many more products can Apple come up with to stay in the game against their competitors? Apple’s competition is making such  huge changes to the technology  world that are really a big deal, such as waterproof phones (yes, this means no more bags of rice to dry out your phone). Why isn’t Apple holding up to their reputation?
According to TIME magazine, iPhone sales have fallen tremendously. This drop in sales ultimately means a fall in profit and revenue, which is not a good sign to employees and investors. But what could be the root of these terrible sales? I can’t say I’m very surprised. It seems that customers, including myself, are bored of the different renditions of the same product. How many more iPhone models can there be? It seems like the newer ones that are being released really aren’t that different from previous models. What makes customers want to go out and upgrade their phones for a couple hundred dollars when barely anything has changed? Apple either needs to come out with new and different products or drastically change the current ones. Maybe it is time for Apple to enter a new market because of their lack of new product ideas. What do you guys think Apple needs to create or perfect in order to stay in the game? Please comment below with your ideas!

Wrong place, wrong time

160722135203-david-duke-announces-senate-run-exlarge-169

In the midst of all of the hate and violence happening in our society today, it is obvious why racism is such a sensitive topic. In these past few weeks, our country has seen innocent lives being taken away due to a myriad of reasons, all creating a feeling of separation in our country. With the recent terrorist attacks, attacks on police officers and the Black Lives Matter movement, it is understandable why we are uneasy. We look to our politicians for direction in times like these. What happens when the politicians have radical pasts?

On Friday, a former Ku Klux Klan member who held position as Grand Wizard declared his campaign to run for US Senate. He claims he wants to protect the rights of European population. Especially with all of the recent racial tension, more groups have formed that aim to protect their racial groups. While he claims he respects all races, his KKK values can still be seen in his views.  It also seems like most politicians are against this controversial move.

At a time where race is such a sensitive subject, how does a candidate that formerly claimed himself as a KKK member run for office and believe he has a chance of winning? While I am not saying that I agree or disagree with his perspectives and beliefs, I do not think this move is a specifically smart one and do not know how far he will really get. While he does have more accepting views as radical KKK individuals, I still do not think it will be enough to give him a winning edge. Race is such a controversial subject among all ethnicities in society today that a former KKK member will stand no chance in holding such an important position in the US Senate. Please comment your thoughts and opinions on a former KKK member pursuing the US Senate. Do you think he will get very far in the process?

Leak of the century

Another controversy occupied the televisions of millions across the United States as Hillary Clinton became the target of investigation over her leaked email scandal. Yes, that is right. The next potential president of the United States being under investigation by the FBI for 30,000 emails she sent over an unsecured server. These emails contained classified information that easily could have gotten in the hands of the wrong people; including emails considered “secret” and “top secrehttps---blueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com-uploads-card-image-154603-wiklkst”, and eventually became leaked.

Yesterday, WikiLeaks released about 20,000 of these  emails  for the public to see for themselves. And it does not help Hillary’s case at all. These emails include controversial bashes against Democratic competitor, Bernie Sanders, that aim to decrease his popularity due to his religion and more. Why were these emails sent over an unsecured server? How does this justify Hillary being responsible enough to take over the White House? Many are up in arms over her lenient charges from the FBI…which were none. I am not quite sure how Hillary is not being punished for being so irresponsible with such sensitive information. If she cannot be trusted with emails, how can she be trusted for the welfare of our country? I think Hillary owes an apology to America, as the emails could have gotten in the hands of our enemies and used against us.

America should stop worrying about the “plagiarized” speech given by Melania Trump this past week and focus on the illegal acts of Hillary Clinton. If this were someone else responsible for sending the unsecured emails (Donald Trump), the outcome of punishment would be completely opposite. What are your thoughts on this controversial situation?

Do we really have to catch them all?

Who remembers Pickachu? or Squirtle? Seems like most of our generation, the millennials, did not take long to reach back into their memory banks and relive their Pokemon days. July brought a new obsession to our alrepokemon_go_logoady technology obsessed era, Pokemon Go. This game brings every Pokemon obsessed fan their dreams of being a trainer (the person who catches and controls their Pokemon) through their phone’s GPS and camera devices. But what is so special about this game? I keep asking myself and cannot really seem to figure it out. The only things I see coming out of this game are pure disaster.

It seems like every time I read or watch the news, another mishap has come out of Pokemon Go. Lets reflect on some of the incidents over the past couple weeks such as the player who crashed into a police car while playing the game and driving at the same time. Or maybe the two men who fell off a cliff while not paying attention and trying to “catch ’em all” at the same time. Yup…driving into a police car and falling off a cliff do not seem worth it to me just in order to catch a virtual Pokemon to add to your collection. Not to mention everyone who walks around, especially on campus, playing this game look like zombies addicted to a lit up screen.

So if your a Pokemon Go fan, I have advice for you: Let’s put down the phone and maybe even delete the app. Players are becoming too hypnotized by a game that delivers less than satisfying outcomes. And if you refuse to take my advice, watch out because you may be the next one to fall off that cliff! What are your thoughts and opinions on this game?
